Bank Holiday Today: Today is the first day of the new year 2026. So, people may be confused about whether banks are open or closed today. Let us clear up this dilemma for you with this news. According to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) official holiday list, bank holidays on New Year's Day vary from state to state and depend on local events, customs, and celebrations.
In which states will banks remain closed?
- There is no nationwide bank holiday on Thursday, January 1st, the first day of the New Year. However, according to RBI guidelines, banks will be closed in Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Meghalaya. Consequently, banks will remain closed in cities like Aizawl, Chennai, Gangtok, Imphal, Itanagar, Kohima, Kolkata, and Shillong. Customers are advised to plan ahead, as branch-based services will not be available on this day.
- Banks will remain closed in Kerala and Mizoram on January 2 as Mannam Jayanti will be celebrated in Kerala and the New Year will be celebrated in Mizoram on this day, hence bank branches in Aizawl, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram will not function on this day.
- Banks in Uttar Pradesh will be closed on January 3rd to mark the birth anniversary of Hazrat Ali. Bank branches in Lucknow will remain closed.
- Banks across West Bengal, including those in Kolkata, will be closed on January 12th to mark Swami Vivekananda's birth anniversary.
- Banks will be closed on January 14th for Magh Bihu and Makar Sankranti in Assam, Odisha, and Arunachal Pradesh. Similarly, banks in Ahmedabad, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, and Itanagar will remain closed on this day.
- Banks in cities across South Indian and Northeastern states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Gangtok will be closed on January 15th for Pongal, Makar Sankranti, and Uttarayan Punyakaal. Banks in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Vijayawada will remain closed on this day.
- Thiruvalluvar Day will be celebrated in Tamil Nadu on January 16. Banks will be closed in Chennai for this occasion.
- Uzhavar Thirunal will be celebrated in Tamil Nadu on January 17. Bank branches in Chennai will be closed on this day.
- Banks in West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura will be closed on January 23rd for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birth anniversary, Saraswati Puja, and Basant Panchami. Banks will remain closed in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Kolkata.
- There will be a bank holiday across the country on 26th January due to Republic Day.
