The stock market on the last day of the year

The Nifty 50 rose 0.7% on Wednesday, ending a four-session losing streak. This rise was driven primarily by metal stocks after the government announced tariffs on some steel products to curb cheap imports. This surge helped the index recover from its December losses. Similarly, the Nifty ended 2025 with a gain of 10.5%, emerging as the best-performing major NSE index, although it underperformed many of its global peers. However, despite this surge, foreign investors sold shares worth Rs 3,597 crore on the day.

global market situation

Global markets closed lower on the final day of the year. The S&P 500 Index also declined. However, the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq Composite posted gains. In Asian markets, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange ended 2025 with a 28% annual gain. China's Shanghai Composite Index and Shenzhen Composite Index gained 18% and 28%, respectively. Many markets will be closed today for the New Year holiday, so trading volume will be limited.
