Indore Drinking Water Tragedy: The situation of people falling ill after drinking contaminated water in Indore's Bhagirathpura area has become more serious. Several people admitted to various hospitals after complaining of diarrhea and vomiting have died. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it extremely tragic, and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also assured that the government will bear the entire cost of the treatment of all patients admitted to the hospital. Let us tell you what problems drinking contaminated water causes in the body.
Advice to drink only boiled water
The area where the accident occurred is home to approximately 15,000 people. Due to the contaminated water supply, new patients continued to emerge throughout the day, including women and children. The health department set up medical camps in the area and examined people, while the Indore Municipal Corporation team conducted a cleanliness drive and distributed chlorine tablets. The administration has strictly advised people to drink only boiled water. Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani stated that the admitted patients complained of vomiting and diarrhea after drinking the contaminated water. Water samples have been collected from the area and sent for testing, with results expected within 48 hours. Locals say that people fell ill after drinking water supplied from municipal taps. Taking the matter seriously, the Chief Minister has directed the local administration to provide immediate and effective treatment to all patients.
Contaminated water confirmed
The municipal corporation team mapped the water pipeline in Bhagirathpura and began an investigation, which confirmed water contamination near the main line. Municipal Commissioner Dilip Kumar Yadav stated that sewage from a new toilet built near the police checkpoint was draining into a pit instead of a septic tank. This pit was located directly above the water supply line, where a joint was also present in the pipeline, allowing the contaminants to mix with the water. To control the situation, the municipal corporation has decided to flush the pipeline for the next two days and advised residents not to use tap water.
What problems does it cause in the body?
Dr. Rajneesh Kumar, AIIMS Gorakhpur, explains, "Contaminated water contains bacteria, viruses, and parasites that directly attack the intestines. This causes frequent, loose stools, leading to severe dehydration and salt loss. This can even be fatal in children and the elderly." He further explains that the toxins in contaminated water damage the stomach lining, causing nausea, vomiting, and severe stomach cramps. Sometimes, the patient is unable to eat or drink anything.
