Chronic Lung Disease: For how many weeks should people with chronic lung disease leave Delhi? Learn the doctor's advice.

Lung Health: The air quality in Delhi is quite poor at the moment. It's significantly affecting people's health. Let's explain how far away from Delhi people with chronic lung disease should stay.

Delhi Air Pollution: Delhi's air has become quite polluted after Diwali. People have found some relief now, as the AQI has dropped below 200 in most areas. But this is no less dangerous. This is especially not good for those suffering from chronic lung disease. According to experts, this situation is extremely dangerous not only for children and the elderly, but also for patients with chronic lung disease, asthma, bronchitis, and ILD. Let us tell you when people suffering from chronic lung disease should leave Delhi.

How does pollution affect the lungs?

AIIMS pulmonologist Dr. Randeep Guleria explains that fine particles (PM2.5 and PM10) present in Delhi's air reach deep inside the lungs and cause inflammation. "People who already have asthma or COPD, their lungs become further weakened by exposure to these particles. This rapidly increases symptoms like shortness of breath, cough, and chest tightness." Experts advise that patients with chronic lung disease should stay away from polluted areas for at least 2 to 3 weeks during November and December. According to the WHO, very small particles present in the air, such as PM2.5 and PM10, are very tiny. They are so light that they can pass through the nose or respiratory tract and reach deep inside the lungs. Once there, these particles cause inflammation and oxidative stress, which weakens the lung cells.

What to do if it is not possible to leave Delhi?

Leaving the city isn't easy for everyone, and doctors offer some important suggestions.

  • Use an air purifier with a HEPA filter at home.
  • Avoid exercising in the open in the morning and evening, because pollution is high at that time.
  • Wear an N95 or N99 mask when going out.
  • Include steam and hot water in your daily routine.
  • Keep plants like snake plant or peace lily inside the house, which purify the air.

Air quality in Delhi is likely to deteriorate as pollutants settle due to stubble burning and cold winds. Doctors say that chronic AQI levels above 200 can also lead to decreased lung capacity in chronically ill patients, increasing the risk of chest infections.
