Dr. Shubham Garg told TOI that breast cancer risk is no longer limited to age or family history. Changing lifestyles and metabolic problems are rapidly increasing the risk of the disease, especially among urban women.
The connection between sleep and breast cancer
Doctors say that sleep disturbances and changes in the body's circadian rhythm can increase the risk of breast cancer. Poor sleep affects melatonin hormone levels, which disrupts estrogen balance. Furthermore, it weakens the immune system and DNA repair processes. Lack of sleep alone doesn't cause cancer, but when combined with obesity, stress, and a sedentary lifestyle, the risk increases exponentially.
Is poor sleep as big a risk as age and genetics?
According to Dr. Garg, age and genetic factors remain the strongest risk factors, but poor sleep is now emerging as an important modifiable risk factor. Many women with no family history of cancer are developing breast cancer due to chronic sleep deprivation, night shifts, and high stress.
Why is abdominal obesity more dangerous?
Not only is weight gain a risk, but fat stored around the abdomen is also considered more dangerous. This fat contributes to inflammation, insulin resistance, and increases estrogen levels. After menopause, this fat becomes the main source of estrogen in the body, which can promote hormone-sensitive breast cancer.
Can lifestyle changes reduce the risk?
Experts say that lifestyle changes may not completely eliminate the risk of breast cancer, but they can significantly reduce it. Getting enough sleep, managing stress, exercising regularly, and reducing abdominal obesity improve hormonal balance and boost the body's immune system. This also reduces the risk of cancer recurrence after treatment.
Why are cases increasing at younger ages?
Breast cancer cases are increasing in India among women aged 35 to 50. The reasons for this are similar to those in Western countries: a sedentary lifestyle, late pregnancy, infrequent breastfeeding, lack of sleep, and persistent stress. Furthermore, late diagnosis is a major problem in India.
When should screening begin?
Doctors suggest that early and individualized screening may be necessary for women with risk factors such as obesity, sleep problems, and high stress. In such cases, clinical breast exams, ultrasounds, or mammography, if needed, may be considered after age 30.
