Mamata Banerjee: CM Mamata Banerjee has broken her silence on the question of contesting elections with the Congress in Bengal. She targeted the Election Commission and the BJP regarding the SIR.

CM Mamata Banerjee answered the question of contesting elections with Congress in Bengal.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday (February 3, 2026) alleged that people affected by the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists are not being given an opportunity to defend themselves. She questioned the process in states just ahead of assembly elections. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee said that Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar could face impeachment proceedings.
Will Congress and TMC contest the elections together in Bengal?
Mamata Banerjee was asked whether there was any possibility of an alliance between the Trinamool Congress and the Congress in West Bengal. In response, Banerjee said, "In Bengal, history has always been that everyone has contested elections against us, and we have always fought alone."
Mamata Banerjee's statement on the impeachment of the CEC
The Bengal CM said, "We know we don't have the numbers, but if a motion is brought against CEC Gyanesh Kumar, we will support it. At least it will be recorded that a motion for impeachment was brought against a Chief Election Commissioner. We wrote six letters to the Election Commission, but received no response. Our leaders met with the CEC, but that too was inconclusive. There hasn't been a SIR since 2002. Why was the SIR decision made just before the elections?"
Why was SIR announced without any preparation, CM Mamata
He said, "Why was SIR announced without any preparation? SIR is only being conducted in electoral states where there is no NDA government. Why is it not being conducted in Assam? People are not even being given a chance to add their names. The names of 5.8 million people were removed without any investigation, but many of them are alive and were removed by declaring them dead. 8,100 micro-observers have been appointed, who are listening to BJP members. If 10,000 votes were cut in a BJP-won seat, up to 70,000 votes were cut in a seat we won."
TMC chief Mamata said, "If you have the courage, don't use the Election Commission as you did in Haryana, Maharashtra, and Bihar. Anyone who speaks Bengali is called a Bangladeshi. We celebrate all the festivals, including Gangasagar, Chhath Puja, and Durga Puja. We attend Christian festivals. Everyone in the state has the right to celebrate their own festivals."
