Why did HDFC Bank impose a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on its own CEO and CFO?

HDFC Bank Fine News: HDFC Bank, one of the country's largest private banks, has imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh each on three of its top officials. These include CEO Shashidhar Jagdishan, CFO Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, and Group Head Arvind Vohra. This decision was made following an internal investigation into an old case involving the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation.

What did the investigation reveal?

The bank had conducted an investigation into the deposit arrangements with MSRDC in 2017 and 2021. A special committee of independent directors investigated this matter. The investigation found no evidence of malfeasance, personal gain, or dishonesty on the part of any officer. However, the committee observed that some officers acted outside the bank's rules and regulations.

CEO-CFO fined with warning

In light of this, the bank's board decided to issue warning letters to the CEO, CFO, and group head, along with a fine of ₹1 lakh each. The remaining staff involved in the matter received only warning letters. The bank also clarified that information regarding the entire matter will be sent to the Reserve Bank of India.

It should be noted that in May 2026, some media reports claimed that HDFC Bank had paid approximately ₹45 crore to MSRDC to secure large deposits. These expenses were shown as marketing expenses. The reports also stated that the bank's CEO was aware of these payments. However, HDFC Bank denied all allegations at the time, stating that the bank had robust audit and control systems and that all decisions were made in accordance with established regulations.

The impact was also seen on the stock

Previously, the bank's former chairman, Atanu Chakraborty, had made allegations of misconduct and misconduct. A thorough investigation was conducted by outside experts, but even then, no concrete evidence was found to substantiate the allegations. Following this news, HDFC Bank's stock fell slightly to close at ₹740. Over the past month, the bank's stock has fallen by approximately 7.34%.
