According to wedding industry experts, families today want their money to reflect quality rather than quantity. Retailers are also observing this behavioural shift. Even though modern weddings are becoming smaller, more intimate and more curated, spending has not necessarily reduced. Handcrafted Fashion Makes a Strong Comeback
One of the most noticeable trends is the rising preference for handcrafted ethnic wear. Darshan Dudhoria, CEO of Indian Silk House Agencies, explains that demand for premium silk sarees, revival weaves and heritage craftsmanship has grown significantly, even in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. The brand, which works with over 15,000 artisans across 62 weaving clusters, has seen a considerable shift toward sustainable and artisanal festive fashion.
Dudhoria notes that today’s buyers value the story behind every outfit — the craftsmanship, the effort and the livelihood of the artisans. Fashion is no longer limited to trends and seasonal designs; it has become a conscious choice that supports traditional weaving communities and celebrates Indian heritage.
Wedding Photography Becomes a Major Investment
Photography and videography have emerged as one of the most thoughtfully planned expenses of the modern wedding. Rakesh and Jyoti Bajaj, founders of Vintage Films, say that urban couples now allocate 7–10% of their overall wedding budget to documentation, compared to the earlier average of just 3–4%.
Multi-day coverage, cinematic edits and personalised storytelling formats are now in high demand. Couples believe that while décor fades and outfits are stored away, the photos and films stay for a lifetime. Therefore, investing in a high-quality visual narrative is viewed as a long-term emotional asset.
The trend of intimate weddings has further accelerated this shift. With fewer guests, minimal décor and digital invitations, couples save significantly on traditional expenses and redirect that money toward premium photography and videography.
Photography as an Emotional Narrative
Vaibhav Singvi, founder of The Moving Moments, explains that wedding photography has evolved from a simple documentation service to an emotionally driven investment. Couples now prefer curated packages, smaller teams and meaningful highlight reels instead of overly elaborate shoots. The focus is on creating a timeless narrative that reflects genuine emotions and personal moments.
Experience-Led Wedding Design Gains Popularity
The shift is not limited to outfits and photography. According to Jay Sharma, founder of Envelope, couples are increasingly investing in experience-based wedding design. Interactive installations, thoughtfully designed pathways, layered transitions and personalised storytelling elements are becoming essential components of modern celebrations.
Instead of focusing solely on decoration, couples want guests to feel connected, comfortable and emotionally involved in the event. The aim is to create a cohesive atmosphere that blends aesthetics with meaningful interactions.
Retail Spending Reflects the Changing Mindset
Nishank Joshi, Chief Marketing Officer of Nexus Select Malls, highlights a strong rise in retail footfall during the wedding season. Categories such as fashion, beauty, jewellery and luxury accessories have seen higher demand, driven by consumers actively searching for personalised and premium products.
The New Wedding Formula: Spend Smart, Not Big
Taken together, these trends show that the current wedding season is not about spending more — it is about spending right. Families are assessing every expense based on its emotional value, purpose and longevity. The focus has shifted from tradition-driven spending to value-based allocation, where each element is chosen thoughtfully and intentionally.
