Want More Privacy on WhatsApp? Here’s How to Hide Your Last Seen and About

WhatsApp has become much more than a platform for exchanging messages. From personal conversations and office communication to voice calls, video calls and group chats, many people use the app throughout the day. This also means that information displayed on a WhatsApp profile can reveal more about your activity than you may realise.

Two such pieces of information are your Last Seen and About.

Last Seen can indicate when you were last active on WhatsApp, while the About section can display a short message associated with your profile. If you don't want this information to be visible to everyone who has your number, WhatsApp provides privacy controls that allow you to restrict access.

You can choose to show these details to everyone, limit them to saved contacts, exclude selected people or hide certain information more broadly.

Here's how WhatsApp's Last Seen and About privacy settings work and how you can adjust them.

What Does 'Last Seen' Mean on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp's Last Seen information indicates when a user was last active on the app, subject to their privacy settings.

For example, if someone opens WhatsApp and later leaves the app, their Last Seen may show an approximate time indicating their previous activity.

While this feature can be useful, not everyone wants friends, colleagues or unfamiliar contacts to know when they last checked WhatsApp.

Fortunately, you can control who is allowed to view this information.

WhatsApp also provides separate controls related to your Online visibility, allowing users greater control over who can see their activity status.

What Is the WhatsApp About Section?

The About section is a short piece of profile information.

Depending on your account, it may display a standard message such as "Available" or another short description you have selected or entered.

Although an About message may seem harmless, users sometimes include personal details in this space. If your phone number is known to people outside your close circle, limiting who can view your About information may provide additional privacy.

How to Hide Your Last Seen on WhatsApp

Changing your Last Seen privacy setting takes only a few steps.

Open WhatsApp on your smartphone and go to Settings. Then select Privacy and look for Last Seen & Online.

You should see options allowing you to determine who can view your Last Seen.

Depending on the current version of WhatsApp, you can generally choose from options such as Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except..., and Nobody.

Choose the option that best matches your privacy requirements.

Menu names and placement can vary slightly between Android and iPhone versions and may change after app updates.

What Do the Different Privacy Options Mean?

Understanding the available choices can help you select the right level of privacy.

Everyone: This provides the broadest visibility. Your Last Seen or applicable profile information may be visible to WhatsApp users according to the feature's current rules.

My Contacts: Your information is restricted to people saved in your contacts, subject to WhatsApp's applicable privacy behaviour.

My Contacts Except...: This option is particularly useful when you're comfortable sharing your activity with most contacts but want to exclude certain people.

You can select individual contacts who should not have access to the relevant information.

Nobody: Selecting this for a supported privacy setting provides the highest level of restriction, preventing others from viewing that information.

How to Change Your WhatsApp About Privacy

You can also separately control who sees your About information.

Open WhatsApp > Settings > Privacy and find the About option.

Tap it and select your preferred audience.

For greater privacy, you may choose My Contacts rather than allowing broader visibility. If there are particular saved contacts you don't want to see your About information, My Contacts Except... may be more appropriate.

Users who prefer maximum privacy can choose the most restrictive option available in their version of WhatsApp.

What Happens If You Hide Your Last Seen?

There is an important trade-off to understand before disabling Last Seen visibility.

WhatsApp generally applies a reciprocal privacy principle to Last Seen. If you don't share your Last Seen with another user, you may also be unable to see that person's Last Seen.

Therefore, hiding your activity can provide additional privacy, but you may lose access to similar information about other users.

This is worth considering before selecting the most restrictive setting.

Don't Forget to Review Your Online Status

Last Seen and Online are related but not identical.

Last Seen concerns your previous activity, while Online can indicate that you currently have WhatsApp open and connected.

When you open the Last Seen & Online privacy section, review both settings instead of changing only Last Seen.

If your objective is to reduce how much other people can infer about when you use WhatsApp, configuring both options appropriately can provide more meaningful privacy.

Why Should You Restrict Your About Information?

Your About section doesn't necessarily need to be visible to everyone.

This becomes particularly relevant if your phone number is used for work, online services, business enquiries or other situations where people outside your personal circle may have it.

Keeping About visibility restricted to trusted contacts can reduce the amount of profile information available to unfamiliar people.

You should also avoid entering sensitive details such as your home address, passwords, financial information or other confidential data in the About section.

Review Other WhatsApp Privacy Settings Too

Last Seen and About aren't the only privacy controls worth checking.

While you're inside Settings > Privacy, review the visibility of your Profile Photo, Status, group-related controls and any other privacy options available in your current version of WhatsApp.

For example, you may not want unfamiliar users to see your profile picture or add you directly to unwanted groups.

Periodically reviewing these settings is useful because WhatsApp may introduce new privacy and security features through updates.

Take a Few Minutes to Strengthen Your WhatsApp Privacy

You don't have to delete your Last Seen or About information entirely to improve your privacy. WhatsApp's audience controls allow you to decide how widely these details are shared.

Go to Settings > Privacy and review Last Seen & Online and About. Choose whether the information should be available to everyone, only your contacts, selected contacts or nobody, depending on the options offered.

While you're there, check your profile photo, Status and group privacy settings as well.

A few small changes can give you significantly more control over what other people can learn about your WhatsApp activity and profile.
