World's largest water metro network to be built in Mumbai

Mumbai Water Metro Project: If you're a resident of Mumbai, this news is extremely important for you. The Maharashtra government is preparing a special plan to provide relief from the increasing traffic in Mumbai and its surrounding cities. The government will develop the world's largest water metro network, costing approximately ₹6,066 crore. Its primary goal is to reduce the pressure on roads and railways, speed up travel, and promote environmentally friendly public transport.

Under this plan, hundreds of kilometers of waterway network will be built. Electric-hybrid boats will also be introduced, and a modern boat-building center will be established in Sindhudurg. The government says this plan will directly benefit millions of travelers in the coming years.

What will be special?

  • The project will be developed at a cost of Rs 6,066 crore.
  • A 340 km long water metro network will be ready.
  • A total of 33 waterways and 44 modern terminals will be built.
  • 203 electric-hybrid boats will be operated for passengers.
  • Once completed, it will be the world's largest water metro network.

Crores of passengers will benefit by 2031

Maharashtra aims to benefit approximately 75 million passengers by 2031. According to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai's traffic problems cannot be solved by simply expanding the road and rail networks. This is why transportation is being made an important part of the city's public transport system. Furthermore, a pod taxi service is also expected to be launched in the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC).

Where will the modern boat manufacturing centre be built?

For the Mumbai Water Metro project, an agreement has been signed between the Maharashtra Maritime Board and Zoya Marine Services Private Limited. An electric boat manufacturing center will be built on approximately 22 acres of land in Sawantwadi taluka, Sindhudurg district, at a cost of approximately ₹150 crore. Electric and environmentally friendly boats for the Water Metro will be manufactured here.
