Reasons for more cameras in smartphones
Smartphone Camera: Suppose you're on a mountain hike with your friends. There's a huge mountain in front of you, and you want to take a full photo of it in one frame. As soon as you turn on the camera, it doesn't capture the entire scene. Then you realize that your phone has another camera, a wide-angle camera. You use that, and the entire scene is captured in a single photo. This is where you understand that just one camera isn't enough; many smartphones have two or even three cameras.
Each camera has its own function.
The main camera on a phone is best for everyday photos. It's typically at 1x. It has the most megapixels and the best light-sensing power. However, if you need to take a large building or a group photo where everyone is in the frame, the wide-angle camera, typically at 0.5x, is useful. This camera covers a larger area at once.
Similarly, if you need to take a close-up view of a distant object, such as a photo of the moon or a person standing far away, a telephoto camera is used. This camera ensures that the photo quality doesn't deteriorate even when zoomed in, whereas zooming too far with the main camera can blur the image. Some phones also have a macro camera, which is designed to capture small objects from very close range.
The power of depth camera and portrait photography
Nowadays, most phones also include a depth sensor or depth camera. Its purpose isn't to take photos, but to determine which objects in a photo are near and which are far. Using this information, the phone blurs the background in your portrait photos, leaving only the person's face clearly visible.
It's also important to know that simply having a high number of cameras doesn't necessarily translate to good photos. Often, companies include three or four cameras in phones for marketing purposes, but only one or two of them are actually of good quality. The remaining cameras may be low-megapixel cameras, merely for show. So, when buying a phone, don't just look at the number of cameras, but also consider the megapixel count and quality of each camera.
