Today, UPI has become a part of our everyday lives. Whether it's sending money, buying vegetables, or shopping online, payments are made in just one click. But this speed can sometimes lead to significant problems. When you look at the screen after making a payment and discover that the money has been transferred to the wrong UPI ID or the wrong account, panic is inevitable. Whether the amount is small or large, the immediate thought is that the money is lost.

In fact, the UPI system is designed to ensure that funds are transferred to the recipient's bank account immediately. As soon as the transaction is successful, the funds are transferred from your account to the recipient's. There's no cooling-off period or automatic reversal. This is why it's difficult to recover funds after an erroneous transfer.

According to the law, once the money reaches another account, the bank cannot withdraw that money without permission, even if the mistake was unintentional.

If you want your money back, the most important thing is the sender's consent. According to regulations, it is the sender's responsibility to verify the correct details before making the payment. In such cases, the bank does not offer a second chance, nor can it automatically refund the money.

In the event of an incorrect UPI transfer, you should first file a complaint in the app you used to make the payment. Almost every UPI app offers a Dispute or Wrong Transfer option within the transaction history. Filing a complaint here won't result in an immediate refund, but it will keep your case on record.

Your bank then contacts the receiver's bank and informs them that the money was mistakenly credited to their account. If the recipient agrees to return the money, the money may be returned to your account within a few days.

But if the receiver refuses to pay, the bank can't do much. Debiting money without the account holder's permission is not possible. In such a situation, filing a police complaint is recommended, but even this doesn't guarantee a refund.

This is the harsh reality of UPI. When everything works well, the system seems incredibly simple and fast, but a small mistake can prove costly. Therefore, the safest approach is to carefully check the receiver's name and UPI ID the next time you make a payment, so you don't have to regret it later.
