Wingo App: After the disclosure of a major case of online fraud, the Home Ministry has completely banned the online gaming app named Wingo in India.

Wingo App: Following the discovery of a major online fraud case, the Ministry of Home Affairs has completely banned the online gaming app Wingo in India. An investigation revealed that the app was discreetly sending fraudulent SMS messages from users' mobile phones. Surprisingly, the recipients of the messages were unaware of this. As soon as authorities realized the scale of the scam, they took immediate action and shut down the entire network connected to the app.
Users' phones have become a source of fraud without their permission.
According to government officials, the Wingo app was using users' mobile devices without their permission. Fake messages were being sent from the phones, designed to defraud others. In this entire scheme, ordinary users unwittingly became victims of cybercrime. The scheme, which involved sending millions of messages, was so widespread that the government had to intervene immediately.
Cyber Crime Center alerts Android users.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) shared information about the incident on the social media platform X. Android users were clearly warned not to download or use the Wingo app. I4C also stated that the app's control server has been geo-blocked to prevent any future activity.
Promotional channels and videos were also blocked.
The government's action wasn't limited to the app itself. Four Telegram channels promoting Wingo, with over 150,000 users, were also shut down. Furthermore, over 50 videos on YouTube promoting the app were also removed. These platforms were the platforms through which the scam was spreading rapidly.
More than one crore fake SMSes banned
According to the Home Ministry, timely action prevented approximately 15.3 million fraudulent SMSes from reaching people. Officials stated that this was an organized cyber fraud and that it was imperative to eliminate it completely to protect ordinary citizens.
India takes a tough stand on online gaming apps.
India has previously taken a tough stance against suspicious gaming and gambling apps. A new law implemented last year completely banned gambling apps. Now, only skill-based games and e-sports platforms are legally permitted in the country. Clearly, the government is not willing to take any risks when it comes to digital security.
