How to file ITR after July 31?

In fact, those who haven't filed their ITR by the deadline can file their return even after the deadline, but they must be aware of certain conditions before they can file. Belated returns can be filed under Section 139(4) of the Income Tax Act.

Belated returns for assessment year 2026-27 can be filed till December 31, 2026. However, if your assessment is completed before this, the return cannot be filed after that.

Know some things before filing belated return

Before filing a belated return, be sure to pay a few important points. Before filing your ITR, double-check important information like Form 16, Form 26AS, TIS, AIS, and bank interest. If you have any outstanding taxes, pay them first, then file your belated return and ensure e-verification.

Late fees will be levied for late filing of ITR

Late filing fees have been fixed for late filing of ITR under Section 234F of the Income Tax Act.

  • If your annual income is more than Rs 5 lakh, then a late fee of up to Rs 5000 may be charged.
  • At the same time, if your annual income is up to Rs 5 lakh, then you may have to pay a late fee of up to Rs 1000.
  • Apart from this, if any taxpayer has tax dues, then he will have to pay not only late fees but also interest under sections 234A, 234B and 234C.
