Knees are such important joints of our body that they remain active in everyday activities like walking, running, or sitting. Therefore, proper care of knees becomes very important. Many people adopt home remedies to get relief from knee pain. However, if the pain in the knees persists for a long time, then it can be a sign of a serious danger. Due to this, you may become unable to walk even two steps.
Orthopedic specialist Dr. Abhishek Srivastava explains that if your knees do not work properly, then it can be difficult to walk even two steps. Due to aging, injury or some diseases, they can deteriorate, causing pain and reduced mobility. In such a situation, it becomes very important to take care of them.
How to keep your knees healthy and strong?
Your knees are one of the most important and complex joints in your body. It is important to take proper care of them because knee problems can seriously affect your mobility and quality of life.
- Control your weight: The biggest load on your knees is your body weight. Extra weight directly increases the pressure on the cartilage of the knees, which causes them to get damaged faster and can lead to problems like osteoarthritis.
- Do regular and appropriate exercises: Physical activity is very important to keep the knees strong and flexible. Choose regular light to medium intensity exercises such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming, or yoga. These exercises put less pressure on the knees while strengthening the muscles around them.
- Take a balanced and nutrient-rich diet: Your diet has a direct impact on the health of your bones and joints. Include foods rich in calcium, vitamin D, and omega-3 fatty acids in your diet. These nutrients help in maintaining bone density and reducing inflammation in the joints, which keeps the knees healthy.
- Adopt correct posture: It is important to always maintain correct posture while standing, sitting, or walking. Wrong posture puts unnecessary pressure on the knees and spine, which can create problems over time. Stand straight, keep your shoulders back, and distribute your weight equally on both feet.
- Rest and prevention of injury: If you feel pain, swelling, or any problem in your knees, it is important to give them adequate rest. Avoid overexertion and get immediate treatment in case of injury. Use proper safety equipment while playing sports or doing heavy work.
- Use of hot and cold compression: Hot or cold compression can provide great relief in case of pain or swelling. Cold compression (ice pack) helps in reducing swelling and pain, especially immediately after injury. On the other hand, hot compression (heating pad) relaxes the muscles and increases blood circulation, which can be beneficial in chronic pain.
- Regular consultation with a doctor: If you feel continuous pain, stiffness, swelling, or any type of problem in your knees, then immediately consult an orthopedic specialist. They can correctly diagnose your condition and suggest a proper treatment and management plan according to your age, health condition and lifestyle.
