Symptoms of eye infection

The symptoms of eye infection may vary depending on its cause. However, if we pay attention to some common symptoms, we will know that our eyes have become infected.

Redness and swelling: This happens when the blood flow increases in the infected area, due to which our eyes start appearing red.

Pain or burning: When the eyes get infected, they start burning or itching.

Excessive tearing or thick discharge: These symptoms are seen during bacterial or viral infection. In case of bacterial infection, there is often a thick yellow or green discharge from the eyes. Whereas in viral infection, excessive tears or water starts flowing from the eyes.

Blurred vision: When there is swelling in the cornea, the person is unable to see clearly and starts seeing blurred.

Sensitivity to light: There are some eye infections in which light cannot be tolerated. Not only does it become difficult to open the eyes in light, but there is also pain in the eyes.

Swelling in the eyelids: Many times our eyelids get swollen due to bacterial infection, which causes difficulty in opening the eyes and seeing.

Types of infections

Eye infections can be classified based on their origin and the area affected.

Conjunctivitis: It is also called pink eye, eye flu or eye infection in common language. This infection spreads very fast and affects our conjunctiva. Conjunctiva is a thin membrane covering the white part of the eye. This infection occurs due to coming in contact with virus or bacteria or due to any allergy. In case of viral conjunctivitis, the eyes usually become red and water keeps falling from them. On the other hand, in case of bacterial conjunctivitis, a thick yellow or green discharge comes out of the person's eye, due to which a crust-like structure forms on the white part of the eye or the edge of the eyelids.

Keratitis: Keratitis is a corneal infection caused by bacteria, virus, fungus or parasites. This type of infection often occurs in people who use contact lenses. If proper care is not taken to clean the lenses, the eyes get infected through the lenses. Its symptoms include pain in the eyes, redness, blurred vision and sensitivity to light.

Hordeolum: Hordeolum is commonly known as stye. In this, a red lump appears on the edge of the eyelid. This happens when our oil glands get blocked. This infection causes a lot of pain in the eyes. This disease usually occurs due to bacterial infection.

Uveitis: Uveitis is inflammation inside the eyes, which affects the uvea (the middle layer of our eye). This disease can be caused by infection, autoimmune condition or eye injury. Timely treatment of this disease is necessary. Even a little negligence in this can take away the eyesight.
