RBI issues new guidelines to curb counterfeit currency notes

The Reserve Bank of India has issued orders to all banks to install currency verification machines in all bank branches located in districts bordering international borders. This will allow for the immediate identification of counterfeit notes coming across the border and prevent them from being reused.

The problem of counterfeit currency has persisted in the country for a long time. To curb this, demonetization was implemented in 2016. Old 500 and 1,000 rupee notes were taken out of circulation. Subsequently, a 2,000 rupee note was introduced, but it was also gradually phased out. Even this did not completely curb the circulation of counterfeit currency in the country. Now, the RBI has clearly instructed banks to implement stricter regulations in this regard.

The RBI, in its investigation, found that some banks were not making adequate efforts to detect counterfeit notes. Following this, new government regulations issued in April mandated that banks strictly adhere to regulations regarding the identification, reporting, and monitoring of counterfeit notes. It has also been mandated that all banks thoroughly train cash counter staff on the characteristics of genuine notes so they can easily identify counterfeit notes.

Preparation of banks will be strong.

The RBI has clarified that every note entering the bank will be machine-checked. If a counterfeit note is found, it will be immediately confiscated. Under no circumstances will the note be returned, and banks cannot destroy it on their own. According to fixed rules, it will be mandatory to report every counterfeit Indian note to the relevant government agencies. The RBI has asked all banks to review their systems and, if necessary, strengthen them further, so that counterfeit notes crossing the border can be detected promptly and prevented from being reused.
