Eat eggs at least once a week, and the risk of Alzheimer's will be halved; a Study reveals

According to research, eating eggs once a week can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's by half. Choline, present in eggs, strengthens the brain. Including eggs in the diet is very beneficial for brain health.

Till now, eggs have been considered to be an excellent source of protein and nutrients essential for health. But a new research has presented the benefits of eggs with stronger evidence. According to a study published recently in the Journal of Nutrition, if a person eats eggs even just once a week, then his risk of memory loss like Alzheimer's can be reduced by 50%.

How was the research done?

This study was conducted on 1,024 elderly people living in the Chicago area. The participants were asked about their diet and egg consumption, and their medical track was maintained for an average of 6.7 years. During this period, Alzheimer's dementia was confirmed in about 280 people. The results found that people who ate at least one egg a week had a 47% lower risk of Alzheimer's than others.

How does it affect the brain

Experts believe that many nutrients present in eggs help in maintaining healthy functioning of the brain.

  • Choline – Helps produce neurotransmitters that support memory and learning.
  • Lutein- It is an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and oxidative stress in the brain.
  • Protein – Necessary for the repair of brain cells and energy.
  • Omega-3 and Vitamin B12 –  Support the nervous system and cognitive health.

Major findings of research

Researchers say that the effect of eggs is not limited to just protein, but many nutrients, including choline, present in them work together to protect the brain from diseases like dementia and Alzheimer's.

Should everyone eat eggs?

Although eggs are considered a superfood, considering the cholesterol present in them, heart patients and those with high blood pressure should consume it only after consulting a doctor. Experts say that if eggs are included once or twice a week along with a balanced diet, consumption of fruits and vegetables and exercise, then it can be an easy and inexpensive way to strengthen brain health as you age.
