Ingredients for making Chana Dal Chutney

- 2-3 dried red chillies (you can add more or less according to your taste)
- 2-3 green chillies (finely chopped, optional)
- 1 inch ginger (grated)
- 4-5 garlic cloves (finely chopped)
- 1 small onion (finely chopped)
- 1/4 cup tamarind pulp (or 1 teaspoon tamarind paste)
- 1/4 cup coriander leaves (finely chopped)
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/4 tsp asafoetida
- 2 tbsp oil
- Salt to taste
- water as per need
How to make Chana Dal Chutney
- First of all wash the chana dal thoroughly. Then soak it in water for about 1 hour. Soaking will make the dal soft and it will be easy to grind.
- After this, drain the water from the soaked chana dal and put it in the mixer jar. Add dried red chili, ginger, garlic and a little water and grind it finely. Keep in mind that the chutney should not be too thin.
- Now heat oil in a small pan or wok. When the oil is hot, add mustard seeds to it. When the mustard seeds start crackling, add asafoetida.
- Then add finely chopped onion and fry it till it becomes light golden and add the ground gram dal mixture to the fried onion. Cook it on medium flame for 2-3 minutes while stirring continuously.
- Now add tamarind pulp (or paste) and salt to taste. If you are using green chillies, add them at this time. Mix well and cook for another 1-2 minutes.
- If the chutney seems too thick, you can add some water and mix it to adjust the consistency accordingly. Cook it for 1 more minute.
- Finally add finely chopped coriander, mix well and turn off the gas.
- Your delicious and spicy chana dal chutney is ready. Serve it hot or cold.
Special Tips
- You can also add a little jaggery to the chutney, which will give it a slightly sweet taste.
- You can also add a little lemon juice to make the chutney more spicy.
