Can You Link Multiple Bank Accounts to One Mobile Number on UPI? Here’s How It Works

UPI has become one of the most widely used digital payment methods in India. From paying for groceries and utility bills to online shopping and transferring money, millions of people rely on UPI for everyday transactions.

But users with more than one bank account often have a common question: Can multiple bank accounts be linked to UPI using the same mobile number?

The simple answer is yes. Multiple eligible bank accounts can generally be linked and managed through UPI when the same mobile number is registered with those accounts. However, the exact number of accounts you can add may depend on your bank and the UPI app you use.

How Many Bank Accounts Can Be Linked to One Mobile Number?

UPI does not work on the principle that one mobile number can be associated with only one bank account.

If you maintain accounts with different banks and the same mobile number is registered with each bank, eligible accounts can generally be discovered and linked through a UPI application.

For example, someone who maintains accounts with three different banks using the same registered mobile number may be able to add all eligible accounts to their preferred UPI app.

The exact functionality, however, can differ depending on the bank, account type and UPI application.

Can You Use Multiple UPI Apps With the Same Mobile Number?

Yes. The same mobile number can generally be used across multiple UPI applications.

For instance, a user may use Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM with the same mobile number, subject to successful verification and the respective app's requirements.

This gives users the flexibility to manage payments through different applications without necessarily maintaining a separate mobile number for each one.

Registered Mobile Number Is Important

The most important requirement for discovering a bank account on UPI is that the mobile number registered with the bank should match the number being verified by the UPI app.

During registration, the UPI application normally verifies your mobile number through the SIM installed on the device.

Therefore, users generally need to ensure that the registered SIM is active on the phone, the same number is linked with the relevant bank account, and the UPI application has the necessary permissions to complete mobile-number verification.

Once verification is successful, the app can attempt to identify eligible bank accounts associated with that mobile number.

Can Multiple Accounts From the Same Bank Be Added?

If you have two or more accounts with the same bank and all of them are registered with the same mobile number, multiple eligible accounts may be available for linking.

However, this can depend on the bank's systems, the type of accounts involved and the features supported by the particular UPI application.

If one of your accounts does not appear automatically, it does not necessarily mean UPI prohibits multiple accounts. You may need to check whether the correct mobile number is registered with that account or contact the bank.

Can You Choose a Different Bank Account for Payments?

When multiple accounts are linked, UPI apps generally allow users to select a primary or default bank account for transactions.

Users can also switch between linked bank accounts depending on the features available in their UPI application.

For example, you may keep one account for everyday spending and another for larger or specific payments while managing both through the same UPI app.

Does Every Bank Account Get the Same UPI ID?

Not necessarily. UPI IDs are created and managed through UPI applications and participating payment service providers.

A user can therefore have multiple UPI IDs associated with different apps or bank accounts while continuing to use the same registered mobile number.

The UPI ID, mobile number and bank account are related but are not the same thing.

What If Your Bank Account Doesn't Appear in the UPI App?

If an account is missing, first check whether the mobile number registered with your bank is the same as the SIM being used for UPI verification.

You should also ensure that the SIM can send SMS messages and that the UPI app has the required permissions. Temporary bank-server or UPI-service issues can also prevent an account from appearing.

If the problem continues, contacting your bank or the UPI application's official support channel is the safest option.

One Number Can Manage Multiple UPI-Linked Accounts

So, you do not necessarily need a separate mobile number for every bank account you want to use with UPI.

Multiple eligible bank accounts—and even multiple UPI apps—can generally operate using the same mobile number, provided that number is properly registered with the respective banks.

The number of accounts and specific features available can vary by bank and UPI app, so users should check the latest rules of their bank and payment application before relying on a fixed numerical limit.
