Marburg Virus: The spread of Marburg virus in Tanzania has also alerted neighboring Kenya. A health official said Kenya is on high alert after neighboring Tanzania confirmed an outbreak of Marburg virus disease (MVD) in the northwestern Kagera region.

Kenya Marburg Virus News: In a statement issued on Tuesday in Kenya's capital Nairobi, Mary Muthoni, Principal Secretary for Public Health and Occupational Standards in the Ministry of Health, said that although no case has been reported in Kenya, the risk in the country has increased due to the movement of large numbers of people across the border from Tanzania and other neighboring countries. She said, "The Ministry of Health is committed to the health and safety of all Kenyans. As a result, preparations are being enhanced in the country through the development of the Marburg Virus Disease Preparedness and Response Plan."
According to news agency Xinhua, the statement was issued on Monday after the confirmation of the Marburg virus outbreak in Tanzania's Kagera region, where a positive case was found during the investigation of the suspected infection. Tanzania reported that a total of 25 suspected cases have been identified as of Monday. All have tested negative and are currently being closely monitored. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Tanzania previously reported an MVD outbreak in the Kagera region in March 2023. This was the country's first case. A total of nine cases and six deaths were recorded during this period.
Muthoni said surveillance has been stepped up in all counties and at all points of entry across the country to prevent an outbreak of the serious disease, which also causes deaths.
"We advise the general public to follow public health measures and seek medical help at the nearest public health facility if you experience any symptoms of Marburg virus disease," Muthoni said.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Marburg virus is transmitted to people from fruit-eating bats and spreads to humans through direct contact with bodily fluids, surfaces and materials of infected people. In Africa, outbreaks and sporadic cases have been reported in Angola, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa and Uganda.
