Reason for the death of Khaleda Zia
Begum Khaleda Zia, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), passed away at around 6 a.m. today (December 30) at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old. Her death was due to a long and serious illness. Doctors and a medical board stated that she died due to multi-organ failure. Let us find out what serious illnesses Khaleda Zia was suffering from.
What diseases was Khaleda Zia suffering from?
- Liver Cirrhosis: Khaleda Zia's most serious and life-threatening condition was liver cirrhosis. According to doctors, it had reached an advanced stage. Liver cirrhosis causes fluid retention in the abdomen and chest, bleeding, and the accumulation of toxins in the body. Doctors confirmed this in 2021. Afterward, it was repeatedly suggested that a liver transplant was necessary, but due to her age and condition, it was not possible.
- Diabetes: Khaleda Zia had been suffering from this condition for many years. It should be noted that diabetes also has adverse effects on other organs of the body.
- Heart Problem: Khaleda Zia had a blockage in her heart. Stents were initially placed, and later a pacemaker was also implanted. Doctors determined the heart problem was a long-standing one.
- Kidney Failure: In the final days of her life, Khaleda Zia's kidneys were severely affected. She had to undergo daily dialysis. Doctors reported that her condition worsened when she stopped dialysis.
- Lung infection and shortness of breath: In November 2025, Khaleda Zia suddenly developed difficulty breathing, a cough, and a fever. A diagnosis of pneumonia was found in her lungs. She was subsequently placed on a ventilator.
- Arthritis: Khaleda Zia was also suffering from joint pain and other age-related problems like eye problems, weakness, and body pain.
The condition worsened in November.
It should be noted that Khaleda Zia suddenly fell seriously ill on November 23, 2025. Due to shortness of breath, fever, and weakness, she was immediately admitted to Evercare Hospital. Initially, she was kept in the CCU, but when her condition worsened, she was shifted to the ICU.
What information did the doctor give?
Khaleda Zia's personal physician, Professor Dr. AZM Zahid Hussain, stated on December 27-28 that she was going through a critical moment. She was experiencing multiple organ failure. Doctors said that her advanced age and multiple illnesses made it difficult to treat them all at once.
