What happened to Yashasvi Jaiswal?
Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young opening batsman of the Indian cricket team, suddenly fell ill. On December 16, 2025, while playing for Mumbai against Rajasthan in a Super League match of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), Yashasvi experienced severe stomach pain. After the match, his pain worsened so much that he was admitted to Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad, near Pune. Let's find out what illness led to Yashasvi's hospitalization and how dangerous this illness is.
What happened during the match?
A match was underway between Mumbai and Rajasthan at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Mumbai won the toss and elected to bowl first. Yashasvi Jaiswal came out to open the innings. Early in the match, he began experiencing stomach cramps. Despite this, he remained on the field and shared a 41-run partnership with Ajinkya Rahane. However, Yashasvi was dismissed after just 16 balls. His pain worsened after the match. When his condition worsened, he was taken to the hospital.
What came out in the investigation?
Yashasvi was admitted to the emergency room at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, Pimpri-Chinchwad (near Pune). A team of gastroenterologists examined him. An ultrasound (USG) and CT scan were performed. The examination revealed inflammation in the stomach and intestines, leading to a diagnosis of acute gastroenteritis. Doctors prescribed him medication to help with dehydration and reduce pain.
What is this disease and why does it occur?
Dr. Amit Sharma, the hospital's senior gastroenterologist, explained that Yashasvi has been diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis, a common stomach infection often referred to as a stomach bug or vomiting and diarrhea. Yashasvi's condition is currently stable. Dr. Sharma said this illness is usually caused by a virus or bacteria and resolves within a few days. He added that such a condition can quickly become serious in athletes, as their bodies are often overworked, making hospitalization necessary.
