Why the Draw Was Not Enough for India

The qualification scenario became particularly close because India and Australia were level on two points, while their goal difference was also identical.

India’s path became considerably more difficult after a 0-2 defeat against the Netherlands in Pool E. That result increased the importance of the final match against Australia.

With semifinal qualification on the line, India needed to make the most of its opportunities against the Australian side.

The players succeeded in keeping Australia scoreless throughout the match, but the goal India desperately needed at the other end never arrived.

As the minutes passed, the pressure increased, yet neither side could produce the decisive finish. The goalless draw eventually confirmed that India would not advance to the semifinals.

India to Play for Fifth or Sixth Position

Although the dream of competing for the 2026 Women’s Hockey World Cup title is over, India’s tournament has not yet concluded.

The team will now compete in a classification match that will determine whether it finishes fifth or sixth in the tournament. A strong performance in that contest would allow India to end its World Cup campaign on a positive note.
