Crude oil prices again rose above USD 80 per barrel on Thursday, August 6th. While petrol, diesel, and CNG rates remained unchanged across the country, a proposed levy on LPG and natural gas could make cooking gas more expensive in the future. According to a Reuters report, if the government approves this proposal, it could increase the price of a domestic LPG cylinder by approximately ₹18.
LPG cylinders may become more expensive
According to reports, India has proposed a levy of Rs 1.29 per kg on LPG and Rs 1.43 per standard cubic meter (SCM) on natural gas. If this proposal is implemented, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder may increase by about Rs 18. Reuters reported that the revenue from this levy will help increase India's strategic energy reserve. Apart from crude oil, the country is planning to create a strategic reserve for natural gas for the first time and maintain about six weeks of LPG stock to strengthen energy security.
