US-Venezuela Oil Deal: Will petrol and diesel become cheaper in India?

A major oil agreement has been reached between the United States and Venezuela. US President Donald Trump has described it as the world's largest oil deal. Under this agreement, the US will gain significant control over Venezuela's approximately 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves. Trump says this deal will increase oil supplies in the United States and help reduce gasoline prices.

Now the question is, as America's grip on the world's vast oil reserves grows, will India also benefit from this? Could petrol and diesel prices become cheaper in India in the coming days?

What's the deal all about?
Trump announced the agreement between the United States and Venezuela on Friday. Under this agreement, American companies will invest heavily in Venezuela's oil sector. The plan is to develop approximately 17 oil fields, with private investment estimated at approximately $100 billion.

The US is said to have majority operational control over Venezuela's oil reserves. Extracting this oil and increasing production will take time, as Venezuela's oil industry has long suffered from a lack of investment and infrastructure.

Why is Trump making such a bold claim?
Gasoline prices in the US are currently under significant pressure. The Trump administration wants to bring prices down by bringing more oil into the market. Meanwhile, Venezuela has one of the world's largest oil reserves. If production there increases rapidly and more oil enters the international market, the world's total oil supply could increase. This increased supply could put downward pressure on prices. However, the effects are unlikely to be immediately visible.

Will petrol and diesel prices become cheaper in India?
No, this won't happen immediately. Petrol and diesel prices in India aren't determined solely by crude oil prices. Many factors play a role, including international crude oil prices, the rupee's value against the dollar, refining costs, taxes, and oil companies' costs.

If a large volume of oil from Venezuela enters the international market in the future and this leads to a decrease in global crude oil prices, India could also benefit. India is among the world's largest oil importers, so a drop in international oil prices could reduce the country's oil procurement costs. However, this does not mean that a deal is struck today and petrol and diesel will become cheaper tomorrow.
