The unemployment rate for women has risen in the country, reaching 9.2% in urban areas.
September data on India's employment situation reveals some worrying signs. Finding a job appears to be a growing challenge, particularly for women. According to the National Statistical Office's (NSO) Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the country's overall unemployment rate remained stable at 5% in September, but unemployment pressures increased among women and in urban areas.
The female unemployment rate increased to 5.2 percent in September 2026, from 5.1 percent in August. However, the situation for rural women remained relatively stable. The female unemployment rate in rural areas remained at 3.9 percent. In contrast, the unemployment rate for urban women increased from 8.9 percent in August to 9.2 percent in September. These figures indicate that access to employment opportunities remains a major challenge for women in cities.
What changes have occurred in employment participation figures?
The country's labor force participation rate (LFPR) stood at 55.5 percent in September, down from 55.6 percent in August. This rate measures the percentage of people aged 15 years and above who are working or seeking employment. In rural areas, the figure increased from 50.4 percent to 50.7 percent, while in urban areas it declined from 58.2 percent to 58 percent.
The proportion of people working also declined.
The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) declined slightly from 52.8 percent in August to 52.7 percent in September. This ratio, which reflects the share of the working population in the population, fell from 55.8 percent to 55.5 percent in rural areas, while it increased from 47 percent to 47.2 percent in urban areas.
Slight improvement in the status of men in cities
The unemployment figures reveal a somewhat different situation for men than for women. The overall unemployment rate for men remained stable at 4.9 percent in September. For urban men, the rate declined to 6 percent from 6.1 percent in August. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate for rural men increased from 4.3 percent to 4.4 percent. This clearly indicates that changes in employment conditions are not uniform across all classes and regions.
What do these figures indicate?
September employment data show that, despite the overall unemployment rate remaining stable in the country, employment challenges remain for women, especially urban women. It is essential to better match job opportunities, skills, and the needs of working women. We will closely monitor employment data in the coming months to understand the pace of labor market recovery.
