The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a significant change in the rules governing interest rates on bank deposits. Under the revised framework, commercial banks will be required to offer the same interest rate for deposits of the same amount accepted on the same day, irrespective of the branch where the deposit is made.
The new directions are part of the Reserve Bank of India (Commercial Banks – Interest Rate on Deposits) Second Amendment Directions, 2026, and will come into force from October 1, 2026. The objective is to improve transparency, ensure fair treatment of customers, and eliminate arbitrary differences in deposit rates across bank branches.
Same Deposit, Same Day, Same Interest Rate
According to the revised RBI guidelines, banks must strictly follow the deposit interest rates that are officially declared and published on their websites.
This means that if two customers deposit the same amount on the same day, they should receive the same applicable interest rate, regardless of whether the deposit is made in Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata or any other branch across the country.
The central bank has made it clear that offering different rates for identical deposits accepted on the same day would be inconsistent with the new regulatory framework, except where a specifically permitted exemption applies.
Published Rates Must Be Followed
The RBI has instructed banks to ensure that customers receive only those interest rates that have been officially approved and displayed by the bank.
The move is intended to:
- Increase transparency in deposit pricing.
- Ensure consistency across all branches.
- Prevent discretionary or branch-specific interest rate practices.
- Build greater trust among depositors.
Customers will therefore have better clarity regarding the returns they can expect before investing in fixed deposits or other eligible term deposits.
Daily Deadline for Publishing Bulk Deposit Rates
The central bank has also introduced a strict timeline for updating bulk deposit interest rates.
Under the revised norms:
- Banks must publish their latest bulk deposit interest rates on their official websites by 10:00 AM on every business day.
- A maximum grace period of 10 minutes has been allowed, meaning the updated rates must be available online no later than 10:10 AM.
This requirement is expected to make interest rate information more transparent and easily accessible for institutional and large-value depositors.
Limited Flexibility Under the LCR Framework
While the RBI has standardised deposit pricing, it has allowed a limited exception under the Liquidity Coverage Ratio (LCR) framework.
Banks may offer minor variations in bulk deposit rates only if such differences are supported by legitimate financial or regulatory considerations under the LCR framework. The central bank has clarified that these variations cannot be based on arbitrary or discretionary decisions.
Why Has RBI Introduced This Rule?
The revised directions aim to create a more transparent and customer-friendly banking system.
The key objectives include:
- Ensuring uniform treatment of depositors.
- Improving fairness in interest rate practices.
- Preventing inconsistent pricing across branches.
- Strengthening disclosure standards for banks.
- Enhancing confidence in the banking system.
The RBI noted that the final directions were prepared after examining feedback received from banks, industry stakeholders and the public on the draft guidelines released earlier.
What Will Change for Bank Customers?
From October 1, 2026, depositors can expect:
- Uniform interest rates for identical deposits accepted on the same day.
- Greater transparency in bank deposit pricing.
- Easier comparison of deposit rates across banks.
- Timely publication of bulk deposit interest rates on official bank websites.
- Reduced scope for branch-level differences in deposit pricing.
For retail customers, the new framework is expected to improve confidence that deposits will be treated fairly regardless of the location where they are placed.
Effective Date
The revised RBI deposit interest rate rules will become effective from October 1, 2026 and will apply to commercial banks covered under the amended directions.
Banks are expected to update their internal systems and operational processes before the implementation date to ensure full compliance with the new regulatory requirements.
Bottom Line
The RBI's latest amendment marks an important step towards greater transparency and consistency in the banking sector. By requiring banks to offer identical interest rates on similar deposits accepted on the same day, the regulator aims to eliminate unnecessary variations between branches and provide a more equitable experience for depositors.
The new framework, effective from October 1, 2026, is expected to strengthen customer confidence while making deposit interest rate practices more transparent and standardised across the banking system.
