Petrol and diesel prices continue to vary across Indian cities, with a few locations recording minor revisions on September 19, 2026. While fuel rates remained unchanged in several major cities, consumers in parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka saw small increases or reductions.
Anyone planning a long journey or a daily commute should check the latest price before visiting a fuel station. Public-sector oil marketing companies generally revise petrol and diesel rates every morning at 6 am. The final retail price, however, differs from one city to another because of state taxes, local levies, transportation expenses and dealer commissions.
According to the rates provided, petrol in Mumbai is priced at ₹111.21 per litre, while diesel is available at ₹97.83 per litre. In New Delhi, petrol remains at ₹102.12 per litre and diesel at ₹95.20 per litre.

Why fuel prices differ between cities
Petrol and diesel do not have a single uniform retail price across India. The amount paid by motorists includes the base fuel cost, central duties, state-level taxes, freight charges and the dealer’s commission. Since state and local tax structures differ, neighbouring cities can also have different fuel rates.
Transportation expenses are another factor. Cities located farther from fuel depots or supply centres may have slightly higher prices. This is why checking the rate applicable to a specific city is more useful than relying on a national average.
How to check the latest petrol and diesel rates
Consumers can confirm the current price through the official websites and mobile applications of authorised oil marketing companies. Rates are also displayed at fuel stations and may be available through the official SMS facilities offered by oil companies.
Before filling the tank, motorists should verify the price shown on the fuel dispenser and request a receipt after payment. Because rates can be revised daily, yesterday’s price may not necessarily apply today.
Note: The source text labels some city-wise lists as September 18 even though the article and rate update refer to September 19, 2026. The publication date should be verified against the oil company’s official price list before publishing.
