The central government has made a major decision to prevent a shortage of LPG in the country. For the first time, the Modi government has set LPG production targets for both public and private companies. This decision has been taken to maintain a normal supply of LPG within the country.
It should be noted that LPG imports are currently affected due to global tensions. In an order issued on August 13th, the Petroleum Ministry assigned LPG production targets to 21 refineries and companies. Overall, the government has set a target of 62,810 tons of LPG per day. This is double the daily production target for fiscal year 2026.
Reliance has been given the lion's share of the production responsibility. This private company will be required to produce 18,000 tons of LPG daily. Nayara has been set a target of 4,480 tons daily, while ONGC and GAIL have each produced 6,460 tons. Before the war, India imported 90 percent of its LPG needs from countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia. However, the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz has impacted the country's imports.
