Outbreaks of Nipah, Zika, Crimean-Congo bleeding fever and Kyasanur forest disease have been reported for a decade and now we are facing the Covid-19 pandemic.
Nipah virus : A zoonotic paramyxovirus that is endemic to Southeast Asia. The first outbreak in India occurred in Kerala in May 2018. The virus is transmitted by bats or pigs.
Zika virus: Transmitted by Aedes aegypti, the first outbreak in India occurred in Kerala in July 2021.
Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF): A virus that has caused outbreaks in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
Chandipura virus: Transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks and sand flies, the first outbreak in India occurred in Maharashtra in 1965.
Dengue: Transmitted by Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus, the first outbreak in India occurred in Chennai in 1780.
Japanese encephalitis: an emerging viral infection in India.
Other emerging viral infections in India include: hantavirus, chikungunya virus, human enterovirus-71 (EV-71), influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) coronavirus. Most outbreaks reported in India occur in the western part of the country.
