When was Lucknow University established?

  • In the year 1921, studies started at this university. Last year itself, Lucknow University completed 102 years. Canning College was established in Hussainabad on 1 May 1864, which later became Lucknow University.
  • Starting as a temporary school in HussainabadKothi, it passed through Aminuddaula Park in Aminabad, Parikhana in Kaiserbagh, Lal Baradari and finally reached the present campus in Badshahbagh.
  • This Canning College was given the status of a University on 25 November 1920 and then in 1921 studies started here.

The old name of Lucknow University

You may not believe this after knowing, but the old name of Lucknow University was 'Awadh University'. Completing a century, this university has established its prominence in the field of education in various fields.

The university is very special

Talking about its history, here half percent was for Canning College and a half percent for the institute in which only the children of talukdars used to study. This exclusive institution for the children of talukdars came into existence in the year 1889 as Colvin Talukdars. Before that, the children of common and special people continued to study at Canning College only.

How many students did it start with?

  • After the establishment in the year 1864, for the next two years, only high school education was conducted here and degree classes were started from the year 1864 in Canning College. Initially, there were only eight students at the degree level.
  • In the first academic session that started in 1921, Lucknow University had a degree as well as 12th-class students. After passing the intermediate batch, the next year i.e. in 1922, the intermediate studies were stopped here.
