The festival of Navratri has special significance in the Hindu religion. Although the Navratri date falls four times a year, but it is celebrated with great pomp twice out of these, i.e. in the months of Chaitra and Ashwin. Navratri date falling in the month of Ashwin is also seen as Shardiya Navratri.

It starts on Pratipada of Ashwin month and after continuing for nine days, it ends with the festival of Dussehra. This year, Shardiya Navratri is starting from the Pratipada date of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin month i.e. 15th October, Sunday and will end on 24th October, Dussehra.

The religious importance of Sharadiya Navratri in Hinduism

According to mythological beliefs, Durga Puja is organized on Pratipada of Ashwin month and Shardiya Navratri is celebrated at this time. In the month of Ashwin itself, Mother Durga fought and destroyed the demon Mahishasura, which is why nine forms of Shakti are worshipped during the nine days of Navratri.
