Fortified Rice: The government aims to distribute fortified rice across the country through government schemes by 2024. PDS is distributing rice in 269 districts.

Fortified rice (enriched with nutrients) is being distributed through Public Distribution System (PDS) in 269 districts. Rest of the country's districts will be covered before the March, 2024 deadline. Union Food Secretary Sanjiv Chopra gave this information.

The scheme was launched in October 2021-
PM Modi said in 2021 that by 2024, the government aims to distribute fortified rice across the country through government schemes. Following this announcement, a scheme to distribute micronutrient fortified rice was launched in October 2021 in a phased manner to address the problem of anemia among children and women.

A unique and successful initiative of the Central Govt.
Chopra said that distribution of fortified rice has been successfully implemented in the last two phases. He said, 'This is a unique and very successful initiative of the central government, which has yielded good results in the last two years. We are very excited by the response from people. He said that earlier there were some misunderstandings, but they have been removed. He said that this initiative will lay the foundation of a healthy India.

He said, 'So far we have started distribution of fortified rice through PDS (Ration Shops) in 269 districts. At the pace we are going, the rest of the districts will be brought under the scheme before the deadline. He said that there are about 735 districts in the country, out of which more than 80 percent of the population eats rice. Chopra further said that there is enough fortified rice in the country, as the current production capacity of this rice is about 17 lakh tonnes. (Input: PTI)
