There are so many products available in the market for skin care that it is difficult to understand which is right and which is not. Often some steps keep increasing in our skincare routine.
Earlier, the skincare routine was limited to just washing the face to using toner and moisturiser. Now looking at the skin concern, you have to follow some other steps as well. An important step in these steps is face serum. It is believed that it provides a good dose to your skin which gives a glowing face. It is designed to nourish, protect and hydrate your skin.
But should it always be used? Should it be a part of your skincare routine? Celebrity cosmetic dermatologist DrChitraAnand answers these questions through her Instagram post. He told through a post, 'Do we need face serum? This is a question that comes to the mind of most of us women, but it has a simple answer. If your skin is healthy then you do not need face serum. However, if you have any skin concerns then you should use serum accordingly.
Let us learn about face serum in this article. Along with this, DrChitraAnand also understands how to choose a face serum according to the skin concern.
What is a face serum?
Serums are products that contain active ingredients. A large number of active molecules penetrate deep into your skin and take care of the skin. In simple words, a serum is good to work on skin-related problems like discolouration, dullness, fine lines and acne. It is a light formula that should be applied after you wash your face and then followed by a moisturizer to seal in the moisture.
Benefits of applying face serum
If you use face serum according to your concern, then you will get many amazing benefits of it-
- Absorbs quickly into your skin and does not feel sticky and heavy.
- Being a light formula, it soothes sensitive skin.
- Face serums containing ingredients like retinol can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
- Serum with ingredients like Vitamin-C, and E, ferulic acid, green tea, resveratrol and astaxanthin protect the skin from free radicals.
Is serum necessary?
As DrAnand says that if you have healthy skin then you do not need to apply the serum at all. If you do not have dark spots, ageing marks, or fine lines on your face, then you do not need these things at all. If you have dry skin or other skin problems then you should use it.
Choose serum according to skin concern
DrAnand suggests that if you have dry skin, you should apply a face serum containing hyaluronic acid. On the other hand, if you have acne-prone skin, then you should use a serum containing salicylic acid, azelaic acid and niacinamide ingredients. For pigmented skin, choose a serum that contains malic acid, liquorice, and kojic acid. A serum containing retinol would be good for ageing skin.
If you have any kind of marks on your face or you are struggling with any other problem, then apply face serum on the advice of your dermatologist. As DrChitraAnand said, you don't need to complicate your skincare routine to have healthy skin.
