Due to coronavirus, a surge in cases of infection is being seen globally. There is news of increase in the number of patients in hospitals in many countries including US-UK, Singapore, cases of death are also being seen more in some countries. According to recent reports, in view of the increasing cases of infection in Singapore and America, there is a possibility of another wave.
Health experts say that even though the risk of serious diseases is seen to be less due to the new JN.1 variant, the increasing cases of infection can have many side effects. The increasing cases are not only increasing the risks of new variants, but people are also being alerted about many other types of problems in the body due to corona infection.
Studies conducted since the beginning of the pandemic to know the side effects caused by coronavirus found that this virus can increase respiratory problems along with lung-heart and brain-related disorders. In a recent study related to this, scientists said that virus infection can be a serious problem for the functioning of the brain.
Risk of schizophrenia due to corona
A new study conducted to know about the problems caused by Corona has alerted people about its side effects on the cognitive function of the brain. The study found that people who experienced moderate to severe illness due to infection may have a significantly higher risk of developing diseases such as schizophrenia spectrum and psychotic disorders (SSPD).
This condition may affect the way of thinking and behavior. Till now, the risk of schizophrenia has been seen to be higher in people above 65 years of age.
What is schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder that can cause a variety of emotional problems along with thinking disorders. This disease also affects the way a person thinks, feels and behaves. People with schizophrenia may feel as if they have lost touch with reality, that what is happening to them is not real. People affected by this may feel that someone is controlling them.
Researchers said that the problem of schizophrenia is emerging as a major threat among the side effects caused by corona.
What did the study find?
The team of researchers analyzed data of more than 1.93 crore people to know the problems caused by Covid-19. In conclusion of the study, the team said that surprisingly, our data indicate that even in young individuals, the risk of SSPD increases after being infected with COVID-19. This type of problem occurring at an early age can have a negative impact on the quality of life.
We are already seeing increased cases of mental health disorders and depression due to Corona, but mental disorders like schizophrenia can be a bigger threat.
What do researchers say?
Professor Asif Rahman of West Virginia University says, our study alerts about the known neurotropism of coronavirus and the increased risks of major psychiatric disorders after Covid-19 infection. Till now, about 20% of schizophrenia cases have been seen in people above 45 years of age, corona infection has increased the risk in younger people.
It cannot be said clearly whether people with mild symptoms of infection are at risk or not, but everyone needs to be alert about the risks of corona.
