In case of mild fever, cold, and pain, most of us take over-the-counter medicine without any medical advice. The most commonly used medicine in this is Paracetamol.
Doctors say-
Taking paracetamol for every minor problem without medical advice also has side effects on health. Although Paracetamol is not harmful, in some situations, due to its excess, there can be a risk of many types of problems including kidney and liver.
Medical reports show that paracetamol is the most common drug overdose globally. Its excessive quantity can cause serious problems for the liver. It has often been seen that in some cases problems like liver failure have also been seen due to this. In 2021, 227 deaths due to paracetamol overdose were recorded in England and Wales.
Do not take paracetamol in excess quantity
In conversation with Amar Ujala, internal medicine expert Dr. Imran Alam says-
A dose of 2000mg in 24 hours is considered safe for most people in case of normal levels of fever and headache. However, sometimes the dosage is not maintained while taking it in liquid form. If you are taking paracetamol at regular intervals, then there is a need to be alert about it.
Some people continue to take more than the recommended dose of paracetamol for several days for pain. This could be a harmful situation for them.
Problems caused by paracetamol overdose-
Health experts say-
Symptoms are not necessary in case of drug overdose, although some people may feel nausea and vomiting. The problem of pain can also be seen below the ribs on the right side (where the liver is located). In severe cases, there is a risk of complications increasing.
Having mental confusion and disorientation (called encephalopathy).
Kidneys can also be affected due to lack of urination.
Risk of low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia).
Acid may build up in the blood, causing rapid breathing problems.
What should be done in case of drug overdose?
If you have been diagnosed with an overdose of paracetamol medicine, it may require prompt treatment. If the patient is unstable such as those with low blood pressure or liver problems, they may need to be admitted to the ICU. Depending on the patient's condition, he may also require special treatment.
