Karnataka minister B Nagendra offers to resign
Amid pressure from the BJP, B. Nagendra, a minister in the DK Shivakumar government, has offered to resign. Nagendra was under attack from the opposition over an alleged ₹89 crore scam at the Maharishi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation in Karnataka.
The opposition BJP and JDS have continuously pressured the government to remove Planning and Statistics Minister B. Nagendra from the cabinet. He has now offered to resign.
The BJP protested for several days during the Assembly session, demanding Nagendra's resignation. BJP workers marched from Freedom Park and attempted to surround the Assembly. However, due to lack of permission, the police detained several BJP and JDS leaders and workers, including Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra, as a precautionary measure.
Decision taken under pressure
The opposition also cornered the government on this issue within the Assembly, and the proceedings were impacted. The opposition alleged that B. Nagendra should be immediately removed from his ministerial position, taking moral responsibility for the alleged financial scam within the Valmiki Corporation.
Amid continued protests, uproar in the Assembly, and mounting political pressure from the BJP, B. Nagendra offered to resign as minister.
The BJP alleged that it was inappropriate for the minister of the department to remain in his position amid an investigation into an alleged scam involving approximately ₹89 crore. The opposition has consistently attacked the government on this issue and demanded Nagendra's resignation.
Resignation not accepted
Following this entire incident, Nagendra's offer to resign as a minister is being seen as a major result of the BJP's continued opposition and political pressure. However, the final decision on accepting the resignation rests with the Chief Minister and the Congress leadership.
The Assembly session is now over, but the political conflict between the Congress government and the opposition over the alleged Valmiki Nigam scam is still continuing.
