We often include lentils in our protein-rich diet. However, a gastroenterologist at Fortis explains that lentils don't provide the proper amount of protein, making them an unhealthy source of protein.

A balanced diet is essential for a healthy and fit body. It should contain the right amounts of protein, vitamins, carbs, fats, and minerals. Protein plays a crucial role in repairing body cells and tissues. That's why people prioritize protein in their diets.
In such a situation, people generally prefer non-vegetarian food for protein, but most non-vegetarians consider lentils to be a good source of protein. However, a gastroenterologist at Fortis recently stated that lentils are not a good source of protein, and those who eat them under this belief are completely mistaken. Let's find out if lentils are truly a good source of protein.
Why are pulses not a good source of protein?
Dr. Shubham Vatsya, a gastroenterologist and hepatologist at Fortis Hospital in Vasant Kunj, who specializes in diet and food, posted a video on Instagram explaining that lentils are not a good source of protein. She says, "If you think lentils are a rich source of protein, you're wrong," because lentils lack essential amino acids. Therefore, they don't meet the body's protein needs.
How much protein is there in lentils?
Dr. Vatsya explains that lentils contain some protein, but it's not sufficient for the body. 100 grams of raw lentils contain 24 grams of protein, which is less than the protein found in 100 grams of chicken. In the case of cooked lentils, one bowl of cooked lentils contains 5 grams of protein, and 100 grams of raw lentils makes 4 to 5 bowls of lentils. Therefore, you would have to eat 5 bowls of lentils to get 25 grams of protein, which is generally impossible.
What is a better option instead of pulses?
Protein is needed to repair the cells in the body. Therefore, instead of lentils, you can eat many other protein-rich foods. Non-vegetarians can eat fish, eggs, and chicken, while vegetarians should consume more foods like milk, yogurt, and cheese for protein.
