Gold and silver prices moved lower in India on September 8, 2026, following weakness in international markets. Gold declined for the second consecutive session after remaining unchanged for a day, while silver recorded its first reduction after four days of stable prices.
The latest movement may interest buyers planning jewellery purchases as well as investors tracking precious metals. However, the amount paid at a jewellery store may be higher than the quoted gold rate because the final bill generally includes making charges, applicable taxes and other costs.
Gold prices also vary slightly across cities because of local demand, transportation expenses and differences in market conditions. Buyers should therefore verify the live rate with a trusted jeweller before completing a purchase.
Gold Prices Decline for the Second Straight Day
The price of 10 grams of 24-carat gold fell by ₹10 on September 8. The rate of 22-carat gold also declined by ₹10 per 10 grams.
Over the past two sessions, 24-carat gold has reportedly become cheaper by ₹660 per 10 grams. The corresponding decline in the price of 22-carat gold stands at approximately ₹610.
Despite the latest correction, gold continues to trade at elevated levels. Consumers planning a major purchase should compare prices among jewellers and understand all additional charges before placing an order.

What Is the Difference Between 24K, 22K and 18K Gold?
The term “carat” indicates the purity of gold. A 24-carat product has the highest purity and is commonly chosen for investment purposes, including coins and bars. Pure gold is relatively soft, which makes it less practical for jewellery worn regularly.
Jewellers frequently use 22-carat gold for ornaments because it includes a small proportion of other metals that improve durability. Meanwhile, 18-carat gold contains a lower share of pure gold and is often used in modern jewellery, particularly pieces featuring diamonds or other gemstones.
Customers should look for the Bureau of Indian Standards hallmark and verify the Hallmark Unique Identification number when purchasing hallmarked jewellery.
Silver Becomes Cheaper After Four Stable Sessions
Silver prices also moved down on September 8. One kilogram of silver became cheaper by ₹100 after remaining unchanged for four consecutive days.
The metal experienced noticeable fluctuations at the beginning of the month. Silver reportedly declined by ₹5,000 per kilogram on both September 1 and September 2 before recovering by ₹5,000 on September 3.
Following the latest reduction, silver was priced at ₹2,49,900 per kilogram in Delhi. Mumbai and Kolkata recorded the same rate. Chennai remained the costliest among the four major metropolitan cities, with silver trading at ₹2,54,900 per kilogram.
| City | Silver Price per Kilogram |
|---|---|
| Delhi | ₹2,49,900 |
| Mumbai | ₹2,49,900 |
| Kolkata | ₹2,49,900 |
| Chennai | ₹2,54,900 |
Why Are Gold and Silver Prices Under Pressure?
Precious-metal prices are influenced by several international factors, including US interest-rate expectations, inflation figures, movements in the dollar and demand for safe-haven assets.
Gaurav Garg, head of research at brokerage platform Lemonn, reportedly said that stronger-than-expected US employment data had kept gold under pressure. Such economic data can change market expectations surrounding the US Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision.
Investors are now expected to monitor upcoming US Producer Price Index and Consumer Price Index data. These inflation readings could provide further clues about the direction of American monetary policy.
Interest-rate expectations are important for gold because the metal does not generate regular interest income. When returns on interest-bearing assets become more attractive, demand for gold may weaken. Conversely, expectations of lower rates can sometimes support precious-metal prices.
What Buyers Should Check Before Purchasing Gold
The quoted market price is only one part of the final cost of jewellery. Buyers should ask the seller to provide a transparent bill showing the gold value, making charges, gemstone costs and applicable taxes separately.
It is also important to confirm the purity level, weight and hallmarking details. Prices can change during the day, so the rate displayed in the morning may differ from the amount available later.
