From IPL Mic to PSL Pitch: Kane Williamson Draws Fire for Heading to Pakistan Post-Pahalgam Attack

In the aftermath of the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed 28 innocent lives, anger across India has been palpable — especially with Pakistani links being suspected. Amid this volatile atmosphere, the arrival of New Zealand’s star cricketer Kane Williamson in Pakistan has triggered major backlash.

The veteran batter, who was recently part of the IPL 2025 commentary panel, landed in Lahore on April 24 to play for Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). The move has not gone down well with many Indian fans, who feel Williamson prioritized money over morality — earning from both India and Pakistan within days of the deadly attack.

Earning in Pakistan After IPL Commentary Stint

After going unsold in the IPL 2025 auction — a surprising outcome considering his stellar IPL legacy — Williamson joined the commentary box. But with a $50,000 contract (~₹42.7 lakh) from Karachi Kings, the Kiwi star has now taken a different route to stay in the game — this time with the bat, not the mic.

He is expected to make his PSL debut on April 25 against Quetta Gladiators. Karachi Kings had signed him earlier this year as a supplementary player, but he had chosen to commentate in the IPL instead of playing the PSL’s initial matches.

Reuniting with Warner in Karachi

Another twist to this saga is the presence of David Warner, who is captaining Karachi Kings in PSL 2025. Warner and Williamson were former teammates at Sunrisers Hyderabad, and now their reunion is happening under a Pakistani franchise's banner — a sight that's fueling mixed emotions online.

Fans Question Williamson’s Timing

While no official statements have been made by Indian cricket bodies, social media has exploded with criticism:

  • "How can he come to Pakistan just two days after a terror attack on Indian soil?"
  • "He earned from IPL and now from PSL — at what cost?"
  • "Legends should show moral leadership too."

Although Williamson’s move is professional and within his rights, the timing amid national mourning has raised ethical questions for many.

Williamson's IPL Legacy and Shift

Let’s not forget — Kane Williamson was once the face of SRH, leading them to the IPL 2018 final and scoring 735 runs in that season alone. But after a slow patch and separation from Hyderabad, followed by a two-season stint with Gujarat Titans, he found no takers in the 2025 mega auction.

This left him on the sidelines — until commentary gave him a platform. Now, PSL gives him a pitch.
