There's already an ongoing uproar in the country regarding ethanol in petrol. Meanwhile, new news has emerged, suggesting that mixing ethanol in diesel has failed to meet safety standards. Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Suresh Gopi told Parliament on Monday that mixing ethanol in diesel significantly lowered the fuel's flash point, making it ineffective against established safety standards.

What did the minister say

According to media reports, Suresh Gopi stated in a written reply to Parliament that state-owned oil companies conducted scientific tests on blending ethanol with diesel through their research and development centers. Accredited laboratories and vehicle manufacturers also cooperated in these tests. The investigation found that after adding ethanol, the flash point of diesel dropped well below the prescribed limit. Therefore, ethanol-blended diesel did not meet the required safety standards.
Isobutanol is not being added.

Parliament was also asked whether isobutanol was being blended into diesel. The minister clarified that isobutanol is not currently being blended into diesel.
