The Employee Provident Fund (EPF) is an essential financial support for millions of employees after retirement. Changes to the EPFO system will significantly improve the PF account, contribution, withdrawal, and claim processes for employees. The primary objective of the new system is to simplify and make the process more digital.
The new Social Security Code will provide a new legal basis for the rules related to the Employee Provident Fund. This is expected to further unify the functioning of the EPFO. The most significant change for the average employee is the prioritization of digital processes. Emphasis is being placed on processing PF accounts, KYC, e-nomination, and various claims online. Efforts have also been made to simplify the PF withdrawal process.
Eligible members are allowed to withdraw funds for reasons such as retirement, unemployment, education, marriage, home construction, or medical needs, as per the rules. Provisions have been made to simplify and streamline the withdrawal process for certain situations. Furthermore, the new system also prioritizes the responsibilities of contract workers and main employers.
Greater emphasis will be placed on ensuring employees' PF contributions are properly deposited and receiving social security benefits. Using EPFO features like core banking, online claims, and e-nomination can save employees time. It is expected that PF account management and fund management processes will become easier, especially after a job change.
Meanwhile, the 'Vishwas' (amnesty) scheme is expected to provide relief for some old compliance issues. However, which employee will benefit from which facility will depend on the relevant rules and eligibility. Overall, these changes in the EPFO could be significant in enhancing digital convenience for employees, speeding up processing, transparency, and simplifying PF management.
