Causes of Heart Disease: Although heart disease is a risk factor, some people are at a higher risk than others

Causes of Heart Disease: Although heart disease is a risk factor, some people are at a higher risk than others. One of the reasons for this is the high level of niacin in the body.

According to the World Heart Federation, in 2021, about 20.5 million deaths occurred worldwide due to heart disease. After which heart disease has become the third biggest cause of death. Till now, gender, family history, obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, unhealthy lifestyle were responsible for making the heart vulnerable to disease. But recently a vitamin has been discovered whose high level increases the risk of heart disease manifold.

Published in Nature Medicine, researchers at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute have explored potentially modifiable risk factors for heart disease with a new study that implicates high levels of niacin (vitamin B3) in the body in making the heart more susceptible to disease.

This is how the study was revealed

For the study, more than 1,100 people were observed. In which the scientists identified two molecules, 2PY and 4PY. Both of these are produced when the body breaks down excess niacin. The researchers examined the levels of 2PY and 4PY in two other groups, one American and one European, which included a total of more than 3,000 people. They confirmed that people with high 2PY or 4PY levels had a 1.6-2 times higher risk of developing cardiac disease over the next three years.

Vitamin B3 and heart have an old relationship

Niacin supplementation is used to treat hyperlipidemia, as it helps reduce LDL cholesterol levels and increase HDL cholesterol levels. Even high-dose niacin (1,500–2,000 mg/day) was one of the first cholesterol-lowering drugs.

How to Recognize Vitamin B3 Toxicity

According to Harvard, if there is excess of vitamin B3 in the body, symptoms like dizziness, low blood sugar, fatigue, headache, upset stomach, nausea, blurred vision, swelling in the liver can be seen.

What food increases the level of B3

The level of vitamin B3 never increases due to its natural source. But if you take its supplements then the amount in the body can be more than required.
