Amidst the increasing complaints, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has now started investigating the entire matter.

RBI sought data from banks

NDTV Profit, citing sources, reported that the RBI has asked all banks for complete details of cash available in Tier-2 and smaller cities due to the cash shortage at ATMs. This will help determine the reasons behind the cash shortages at various locations. Furthermore, the RBI is also investigating whether some banks have overspent cash in towns and smaller cities, or whether ATMs have not been reloaded on time, leading to this problem. The RBI has clarified that if such a thing is discovered, action will be taken.

What did the banks say?

Banks say that simply looking at the total cash stock cannot accurately assess the situation. According to banks, notes that are damaged or mutilated cannot be inserted into ATMs.
