A study of German data shows that about 80% of women with breast cancer are still alive 5 years after diagnosis, but only 70% of male patients survive. This is an alarming situation.

Breast cancer more deadly in men: Women are most afraid of breast cancer, but the reality of this disease is different. According to an analysis, men are less likely to get breast cancer than women, but men are more likely to die from this disease. Germany's Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL) says that based on cancer registry data, about 80.4 percent of women and 69.6 percent of men are still alive 5 years after diagnosis.
Men are at greater risk
According to the New York-based Breast Cancer Research Foundation, male breast cancer accounts for less than 1 percent of all breast cancer diagnoses. It can occur in men at any age, but is more common in older men, between the ages of 60 and 70.
How was the research done?
In Germany, 70,550 women and 740 men were newly diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020, according to the Robert Koch Institute. In Hong Kong, 5,565 new cases of breast cancer were reported in women and 27 new cases of breast cancer in men in 2021, according to the Centre for Health Protection. Women have a 13.2 percent chance of developing breast cancer during their lifetime, while for men, this rate is just 0.1 percent.
LGL's analysis of the study results
found that men had more advanced tumor stages at diagnosis, that they tended to be larger than women, and that they were treated less frequently. However, even if these are excluded, men still have a higher risk of death, scientists say, pointing to lifestyle, genetic or biological factors.
Christian Weidner, president of LGL, says, "We are also seeing that breast cancer treatment according to current medical standards, provided it is done consistently, has a positive effect on survival in men as much as in women." This study was done on 2,500 men and approximately 307,600 women in Germany, who were diagnosed with this disease between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2018.
In the United States, an estimated 2,800 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2025, and 510 will die from it, according to the American Cancer Society, compared with an estimated 316,950 diagnoses and 42,170 deaths among women.
Causes of breast cancer in men
According to the Male Breast Cancer Global Alliance, risk factors for breast cancer in men can include many things - such as
1. Treatment with radiation therapy on the breast or chest
2. Having a disease related to high levels of estrogen in the body, such as liver disease or the genetic disorder Klinefelter syndrome
3. Having one or more female relatives who have had breast cancer
4. Having mutations in genes such as BRCA2.
Keep these things in mind:
Both men and women are advised to pay attention to symptoms like lumps in their breasts or any changes in the nipples.
