Meta is continuing to expand the use of artificial intelligence across its platforms. The company has now introduced a new generative AI-powered background editing feature for Instagram, allowing users to transform the background of their photos directly within the app.
The new tool, called AI Backdrop, enables users to modify or completely replace the background of an image by simply typing a text prompt. This feature uses generative AI technology to create visually customized backgrounds that match the description entered by the user.
Meta announced the feature through its official account on Threads, highlighting its aim to make photo editing easier and more creative for Instagram users.
What Is Instagram’s AI Backdrop Feature?
The AI Backdrop tool is designed to help users instantly change the background of their photos without needing advanced editing skills or third-party apps.
With this feature, users can select any image from their phone and describe the kind of background they want using simple prompts. For example, prompts such as:
- “Surrounded by puppies”
- “Chased by dinosaurs”
- “On a tropical beach”
The generative AI system then automatically creates a new background for the image based on the text description.
This allows users to experiment with creative visuals and unique story posts directly from the Instagram app.
How the AI Background Editing Works
Instagram has shared a demonstration video showing how the feature works. The process is designed to be simple and accessible.
Here’s how users will be able to use the feature once it becomes available:
- Open Instagram Stories.
- Select a photo from the phone gallery or capture a new picture.
- Tap the “Backdrop” button located at the top of the Story editing interface.
- Enter a text prompt describing the desired background.
- Instagram’s generative AI will automatically create and apply the new background.
The feature makes photo editing faster and more creative, even for users who have no prior experience with design tools.
Where the Feature Is Currently Available
At the moment, the AI Backdrop tool is rolling out to users in the United States. Meta has not yet announced an exact timeline for global availability, but the company is expected to expand the feature to other regions in future updates.
Once the feature is launched in more countries, users will see a new “Backdrop” option within the Instagram Story creation screen.
Interactive “Try It” Sticker for Stories
Instagram is also introducing an interactive element linked to this new AI feature. When a user posts a Story created with the AI Backdrop tool, a “Try It” sticker will automatically appear on the Story.
Other users who view the Story can tap the sticker to experiment with the AI background editing feature themselves. This encourages wider adoption and allows users to explore creative possibilities directly from friends’ posts.
Instagram’s Growing Focus on AI Features
The introduction of AI Backdrop is part of Meta’s broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence across its apps, including Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Instagram has already introduced several AI-powered features recently, including:
- AI-generated custom stickers, allowing users to create unique stickers through text prompts
- New photo filters that help users personalize their posts
- Advanced editing tools that enhance image customization
These features aim to make the platform more interactive and give users more control over how they present their content.
Generative AI Changing Social Media Creativity
Generative AI technology is transforming how people create and share visual content online. By enabling users to modify images using simple text commands, platforms like Instagram are lowering the barrier for creative expression.
For everyday users, this means they can produce visually engaging posts without needing professional editing software.
As Meta continues to invest in artificial intelligence, more AI-powered tools are expected to appear across its platforms in the coming months.
