The Eighth Pay Commission has become a significant topic for central government employees and pensioners. Its recommendations are expected to result in changes to employees' salaries, allowances, and pensions. Therefore, millions of employees and pensioners are eagerly awaiting the submission of the Commission's final report and the implementation of the new pay scale.
Meanwhile, the central government has provided important information in the Lok Sabha regarding the schedule for the Eighth Central Pay Commission's report. According to the government, the commission is required to submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its establishment. The Eighth Pay Commission was established on November 3, 2025. Therefore, according to the current official schedule, the deadline for submitting the commission's report is generally May 2027.
However, the central government has not officially confirmed that the commission will submit its final report to the government before May 2027. Therefore, employees currently have no fixed date.
The Eighth Pay Commission was established by the central government through a resolution on November 3, 2025. Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai is the chairperson of the commission. The commission is tasked with reviewing various matters related to the pay and allowances, pensions, family pensions, and service conditions of central government employees.
According to government data, approximately 35.77 lakh central government civil servants were in service as of March 1, 2026, while there were 33.76 lakh pensioners and family pensioners as of December 31, 2025. This data does not include pensioners from the defense sector. Therefore, the Eighth Pay Commission is likely to impact a large number of central government employees and pensioners.
On August 10, the Lok Sabha asked the government a question regarding the schedule for the Commission's report. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary provided a written response. He clarified that the Commission would submit its recommendations within 18 months from the date of its establishment. The government also stated that the Commission had not yet submitted its recommendations to the government.
This means that no definitive figures have yet been released regarding the new salary increase for central government employees. The government has not yet made any official announcements regarding the fitment factor, salary increases, or pension changes.
