The 8th Pay Commission is currently being hotly debated among central government employees. Many speculations are being made about how much the salary will increase, what the fitment factor will be, and what the minimum wage will be. However, this time the focus of the discussion is not just on dearness allowance or salary hike, but a proposal to change the method of determining salaries. Until now, a specific family was kept in mind while determining the minimum wage for government employees. But now a demand has emerged to change this method. According to the new proposal, employee organizations had stated that the employee's family should include not only husband, wife, and children, but also their dependent parents.

What should be the minimum wage based on the calculation?

In the current system, a family of three members is considered the basis for determining salaries. Minimum wages and fitment factors are determined based on this calculation. However, in today's changing social environment, many employees are also caring for their elderly parents. Therefore, there is a growing demand to expand the definition of family so that salary calculations reflect reality. According to this proposal, a family could be considered to have five members: the employee, their spouse, children, and parents. If this proposal is accepted, the calculation of essential expenses when determining minimum wages will also change. Expenses for food, housing, education, health, clothing, and other daily needs will be calculated on a more comprehensive scale.

What should be the basic salary of employees?

This change could also impact the fitment factor. If a higher factor than the currently used ratio is applied, employees' basic salaries are likely to increase significantly. According to some estimates, this figure could reach 3.83. If this happens, the current minimum basic salary is likely to increase significantly. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance, and other benefits will then be added separately.

However, this is all still at the proposal stage. No official announcement has been made by the government. Therefore, the figures being discussed cannot be considered definitive. The final decision will be clear only after the Pay Commission's recommendations and the central government's approval.

What did the employee unions say?
Employee organizations say that many government employees nowadays have the responsibility of caring for their elderly parents. Therefore, their expenses must be considered when determining salaries. Some laws also clearly define the responsibility for parental care. Therefore, organizations believe that this demand has both legal and social basis.
