WhatsApp has become an important part of everyday communication. People use the messaging platform not only to exchange texts but also to share family photos, videos, documents, voice notes, status updates and other personal information.

Although WhatsApp provides end-to-end encryption for personal messages and calls, privacy also depends on how users configure the app and protect access to their devices. Someone who gains access to an unlocked phone, for example, may still be able to see conversations unless additional protections have been enabled.

Fortunately, WhatsApp includes several built-in privacy features that give users greater control over conversations, profile information and shared media.

If you use WhatsApp regularly, these five settings are worth checking.

1. Add Extra Protection to Private Chats With Chat Lock

There may be certain conversations you would prefer to keep away from anyone who happens to use or look at your phone.

WhatsApp's Chat Lock feature provides an additional layer of protection for these conversations. Once a chat is locked, it is separated from the regular inbox and moved to the Locked Chats section.

Depending on the device and settings available, access can be protected using authentication such as a fingerprint, Face ID or device credentials.

To use the feature, open or select the conversation you want to protect and look for the Chat Lock option in the chat settings. Once enabled, the conversation will be moved away from the standard chat list.

The other participant is not notified simply because you have locked the conversation on your device.

WhatsApp also offers a Secret Code option that can provide additional privacy by allowing users to hide the Locked Chats folder from the normal chat list and access it using their chosen code.

2. Decide Who Can See Your Profile Photo

Your WhatsApp profile picture can reveal more personal information than you might realise, particularly when communicating with people you don't know well.

You don't have to make your photo visible to every WhatsApp user.

WhatsApp's privacy controls provide options such as Everyone, My Contacts, My Contacts Except…, and Nobody, depending on the app version and platform.

Choosing My Contacts limits visibility to people saved in your contacts, while My Contacts Except… lets you exclude selected individuals. Choosing Nobody hides your profile photo from other users.

On most devices, these controls can be found under WhatsApp Settings > Privacy > Profile Photo.

It is worth reviewing this setting periodically, particularly if you frequently communicate with businesses, unknown numbers or people who are not part of your personal contact circle.

3. Protect the Entire WhatsApp App With Device Authentication

Locking individual conversations is useful, but users can also add authentication to WhatsApp itself.

Depending on the smartphone, WhatsApp may support security options such as fingerprint authentication, Face ID, Touch ID or the device's existing lock credentials.

This adds another barrier between your conversations and anyone who gets temporary access to your unlocked phone.

The exact menu and authentication method can differ between Android phones and iPhones, so users should check the Privacy settings available in their current version of WhatsApp.

It is important to understand that an app lock does not necessarily prevent every interaction with WhatsApp. Depending on notification and device settings, certain actions—such as seeing notification previews or interacting with incoming calls—may still be possible.

For greater privacy, review your phone's lock-screen notification settings as well.

4. Use View Once for Sensitive Photos and Videos

Sometimes you may need to share a photo, video or other supported media without wanting it to remain permanently accessible within the conversation.

WhatsApp's View Once feature is designed for this purpose.

When supported media is sent using View Once, the recipient can open it only once before it becomes unavailable through the normal chat interface. WhatsApp also includes protections designed to prevent screenshots or screen recordings of supported View Once content.

However, View Once should never be considered a guarantee that information cannot be copied.

Someone could potentially photograph or record the screen using another device or use other methods outside WhatsApp's control. For that reason, highly sensitive personal, financial or confidential information should only be shared when absolutely necessary and with people you trust.

5. Review Who Can See Your WhatsApp Status

WhatsApp Status can contain considerably more information than a simple photo or video.

A holiday picture could reveal that you are away from home, a workplace update could disclose professional information, and a family photo may expose details about other people.

Before posting, review who has permission to see your status.

WhatsApp provides audience controls that allow users to share updates with their contacts while excluding selected people or limiting a status to specific contacts.

This can be particularly useful when posting personal photos, family information, travel plans, location-related details or workplace updates.

WhatsApp also supports features for mentioning contacts in Status updates, making it even more important to check the intended audience before sharing something personal.

Don't Forget Other Important Security Habits

Privacy settings can make WhatsApp safer, but they cannot protect users from every type of scam or account takeover attempt.

Never share your WhatsApp registration or verification code with another person. Similarly, do not disclose banking passwords, card details, UPI PINs or OTPs because someone contacted you through WhatsApp.

Users should also review the Linked Devices section periodically. If an unfamiliar computer or device appears there, it should be investigated and logged out where appropriate.

Enabling WhatsApp's available account-security features, keeping the app updated and maintaining a strong screen lock on the phone can further reduce unnecessary risks.

A Few Minutes in Privacy Settings Can Make a Difference

Many WhatsApp privacy features remain unused simply because people continue with the default settings after installing the app.

Taking a few minutes to review Chat Lock, profile-photo visibility, app authentication, View Once and Status privacy can provide greater control over who gets access to personal information.

No privacy feature can make online communication completely risk-free. The safest approach combines WhatsApp's built-in protections with sensible digital habits—especially being cautious about what you share, who you share it with and which devices have access to your account.
